Campaign on generic and biosimilar medicines, Ministry of Health of the Government of Spain
Under the slogan “Generic and Biosimilar Medicines. Effective for you, effective for Health”, the Ministry of Health launched on November 14 an informative campaign on the advantages of biosimilar and generic medicines. It is the first specific website that the Ministry has launched to disclose what generics and biosimilars are. The initiative has been financed with NextGenerationEU funds and focuses on the sustainability they provide, “Both generic medicines and biosimilars are sustainability tools for the public health system. They favor the containment of health spending by reducing the prices of the original reference medicines, maintaining the same guarantees of quality, safety and efficacy and promoting pharmaceutical innovation”.

Biosimilars: Innovation from Sustainability
"Biosimilars: Innovation from sustainability" is a scientific document that, based on evidence and through specific examples, reflects on the areas and mechanisms by which biosimilars contribute or promote innovation. It categorizes the innovation instigated by biosimilars in Pharmaceutical Innovation, Technological Innovation and Therapeutic Innovation. Although it is a report addressed to all the actors of the National Health System, health professionals have been particularly taken into account in its drafting. The report was coordinated by Fernando de Mora, Professor of Pharmacology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and a group of experts from the healthcare field and the pharmaceutical industry participated in its review.

Guidance on Licensing Biosimilar Products
The UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has updated its 2021 guidance on biosimilars to allow for interchangeability between biosimilars if they use the same reference medicine. In line with the recent position of the EMA and the HMA on the interchangeability of biosimilar products, it has expanded the interchangeability section in the following sense: "Once authorized, a biosimilar product is considered interchangeable with its reference product, which means that a prescriber can choose the biosimilar medicine over the reference product (or vice versa) and expect the same therapeutic effect” and “Likewise, a biosimilar product is considered interchangeable with another biosimilar of the same reference product.”

Global Biosimilars Week
IGBA (International Generics and Biosimilars Association) has organized its third Global Biosimilars Week from November 14 to 18. The aim of this social media campaign is to raise awareness of the powerful impact of biosimilar medicines and provide key resources for all stakeholders. Once again BioSim has joined the campaign and has invited national stakeholders, patients, health professionals and administrations, to share their resources and information on biosimilar medicines on social networks with the hashtag #GlobalBiosimilarsWeek. A series of infographics have been shared under the themes established by IGBA for each day that value certain aspects of biosimilar medicines in Spain, the accumulated evidence in our country, as well as the challenges that arise on the national scene.
