Despite the fact that in recent years the biosimilar drugs are beginning to take a greater role, there is still a lot of ignorance about this type of drugs, even among health professionals. Biosimilars, medicines that are very similar, but not identical to their biological equivalents, are essential players in the sustainability of health systems, since they represent significant savings (it is estimated that between 20% and 30%) for the coffers of said systems. .
Today we want to share with you an interesting video made by Hospira, a pharmaceutical laboratory that has recently launched the first biosimilar monoclonal antibody in Spain for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease in adults and children, ulcerative colitis in adults and children, and plaque psoriasis.
The video explains in a simple way what a biosimilar is, its characteristics and its advantages for access to medicines for patients.
We remind you that all biosimilars approved by the EU are subjected to the same rigorous scientific evaluation of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and its committees like any biological medicine. The Agency confirms through its website that each of them "has been compared and matches the reference medicine [...] in terms of quality (how it's done), safety (for example, the side effects that can occur when receiving treatment are similar), and efficacy."
You can activate the subtitles of the video and translate them into Spanish if you wish.
